What to Do After Completing the New York 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course

Completing the New York 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is a major step toward getting your driver’s license, but it does not mean you’re ready to take the road test right away.

Before you can get behind the wheel with a DMV examiner, your course completion needs to be processed, your road test needs to be scheduled, and you’ll want to make sure you’ve had enough practice to drive safely and confidently.

In this post, we outline the three main steps you need to take after finishing your 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course.

1. Wait for Your DMV Confirmation

Before you can schedule your road test, the DMV needs to have your course completion on record.

If you completed the course online with Kruzee, we’ll report your completion to the DMV automatically. It should show up on your file within 24 to 48 hours.

If you completed the course in a classroom or live virtual format, you’ll receive a Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate, also known as an MV-278. Keep the original certificate safe, as you’ll need to present it at your road test and photocopies are not accepted.

2. Schedule Your Road Test

Once your completion is on your driving record, you can book your road test through the NY DMV Road Test Scheduling System. The system offers the earliest available dates and times at sites near the ZIP code you provide. According to the DMV, the earliest available appointments are usually 3 to 5 weeks out, though wait times can be longer during busy periods like summer and school breaks.

Your Pre-Licensing Course Completion is valid for one year from the date it was issued. If it expires before you schedule your road test, you’ll need to complete the course again.

If you are under 18, you’ll also need to have held your Junior Learner Permit for at least 6 months and completed a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours after sunset, before taking your road test. A parent or guardian must complete the Certification of Supervised Driving (MV-262) to confirm your practice hours.

3. Prepare for Your Road Test

The 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course covers important driving theory, but the road test is a practical evaluation. You’ll need to show that you can control the vehicle, follow traffic laws, make safe decisions, and drive independently in real traffic conditions.

Make sure you’re spending time behind the wheel before your test date, especially in the types of situations you may encounter on the road test, such as intersections, turns, lane changes, parking, stop signs, and traffic checks.

If you want structured preparation, Kruzee offers driving lessons across New York with certified instructors who will walk you through exactly what’s tested and run a simulated road test before the real thing.

Conclusion

Completing the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is the step that makes you eligible to move toward the road test, but there are still a few things to do before test day.

Wait for your completion to be processed, schedule your road test as early as you can, and use the time before your appointment to keep practicing. The course gives you the foundation, but your behind-the-wheel practice is what helps you build the confidence and control you’ll need on the road test.
