The Most Common Reasons People Fail the New York Road Test

The New York Road Test is designed to evaluate whether you can drive safely and confidently in real-world conditions. Examiners don’t expect perfection, but they do expect consistent awareness and the ability to carry out maneuvers safely.

In this guide, we’ll break down the most common mistakes by category, explain what each one means, and give you practical tips to avoid them.

How is the New York Road Test Scored?

The test is scored using the New York State Road Test Scoring Sheet, where each mistake has a point value. If you accumulate 30 points or more, you fail the test.

Using the scoring sheet, the examiner tracks your performance across categories like parking, turning and intersections, and driving in traffic. The point value of each error depends on the severity:

  • 5 points: Minor infractions, such as forgetting to signal when parking.
  • 10 points: Moderate infractions, such as following too closely.
  • 15 points: Serious infractions, such as speeding.

Parking, Backing, and U-Turn

Fails to Observe/Use Caution (10 Points)

This error usually means you didn’t properly check your mirrors, blind spots, or surroundings before backing up, parking, or performing a U-turn. It could also mean you moved too quickly or without enough care in a tight parking space.

How to Avoid It: Before starting any maneuver, take a moment to scan your surroundings, check all mirrors, and glance over your shoulder. Once you’ve confirmed it’s safe, proceed slowly.

Unable to Park Properly (15 Points)

Examiners expect you to park smoothly, safely, and close to the curb – ideally within about 12 inches. You’ll be penalized if you:

  • Drive over the curb
  • Park at an angle instead of straight within the stall
  • Need more than three attempts to complete the maneuver

How to Avoid It: Practice both parallel and stall parking until you can do them confidently with minimal corrections. Working with a certified driving instructor can help you get there.

Turning & Intersections

Fails to Stop Near Center of Intersection When Waiting to Turn Left (10 Points)

When waiting to turn left at an intersection, examiners want to see that you position your vehicle correctly. If you stop too far back, you won’t have a clear view of oncoming vehicles. If you creep too far forward, you risk being in the way of oncoming traffic.

How to Avoid It: When the light turns green, move forward into the center of the intersection, keep your wheels straight, and wait for a safe gap in traffic with no pedestrians in the crosswalk before making your turn.

Inattentive to Traffic Signs, Signals, or Lane Markings (10 Points)

This error means you failed to notice or respond correctly to important road signs, signals, or markings. It can include:

  • Signs: Exceeding the posted speed limit or rolling through a stop sign.
  • Signals: Going through a stale yellow light or ignoring a green arrow turn signal.
  • Lane Markings: Drifting out of your lane or missing a turn-only lane.

How to Avoid It: Use the New York State Driver’s Manual to brush up on the meanings of signs, signals, and markings. While driving, scan your surroundings so that you’re always aware of upcoming instructions and can respond to them appropriately.

Driving in Traffic

Poor Judgment in Traffic (10 Points)

This error means making unsafe decisions while driving in traffic, such as:

  • Changing lanes abruptly without signaling or checking blind spots
  • Following too closely (i.e., tailgating)
  • Failing to adjust speed for road conditions, like driving too fast around a sharp curve

These mistakes put yourself and others at risk, and show the examiner that you’re not anticipating how other drivers might act.

How to Avoid It: Always keep a safe following distance, use your mirrors frequently, and check for a clear gap before merging or turning. Anticipate the actions of other drivers (assume they may stop suddenly, speed up, or change lanes) and give yourself extra space and time to react.

Fails to Yield Right of Way to Pedestrians (15 Points)

One of the most common (and most serious) mistakes is not yielding when a pedestrian has the right of way. Most often, this happens when drivers turn left on a green light and focus only on oncoming traffic, forgetting to check the crosswalk. Even if the pedestrian has only just stepped off the curb, cutting them off or crowding them can result in an automatic fail.

How to Avoid It: Always scan crosswalks before turning. If a pedestrian is anywhere in the crosswalk, you must yield until they’ve cleared.

Final Thoughts

Most mistakes on the New York Road Test don’t occur during complicated maneuvers – they are the result of small but serious lapses in judgment or awareness. The best way to avoid these mistakes is to practice regularly in real traffic and make safety your top priority.
