Taking the G2 Road Test is an important milestone for every Ontario driver. While it can feel a bit intimidating, understanding what to expect will make test day much less stressful.
In this post, we’ll walk you through when you can take the test, what happens during it, and what to expect afterward.
When Can I Take the G2 Road Test?
In Ontario, there are a couple of steps you’ll need to complete before you can book your road test:
- Get Your G1 License: by passing a written knowledge test.
- Practice Driving with a Licensed Driver: You must hold your G1 for 12 months before taking your road test, or 8 months if you took a government-approved BDE course.
Once you’ve met the requirements, you can book your road test online through the DriveTest website.
Before the Test
Here is what you need to do on test day:
- Arrive Early: Plan to get to the DriveTest centre 20-30 minutes before your scheduled time. This will give you breathing room to check in and get settled.
- Bring the Right Documents: You must bring your valid G1 licence.
- Bring a Safe Vehicle: You’re responsible for providing a test-ready vehicle. It must be registered, insured, and in good working condition. Double-check that all lights, signals, brakes, and windshield wipers are working properly.
If you’ve enrolled in our BDE Course + Road Test Ready Package, you’ll take the test in your instructor’s car which is fully insured and roadworthy.
During the Test
The G2 road test typically takes about 20 minutes. When you arrive at the DriveTest centre, you’ll check in and present your G1 licence. After that, your examiner will meet you and inspect your car to make sure it’s safe. From there, you’ll begin the road test which follows a planned route through nearby streets.
What You’ll Be Tested On
Once you start the test, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate safe driving maneuvers, such as:
- Vehicle Control: Showing smooth acceleration, braking, and steering throughout the test.
- Left and Right Turns: Making safe and controlled turns at intersections, with proper signalling, lane positioning, and speed adjustment.
- Navigating Intersections: Observing right-of-way rules, coming to full stops, and scanning for pedestrians and oncoming traffic before proceeding.
- Lane Changes: Checking mirrors and blind spots, signalling early, maintaining speed, and completing the maneuver smoothly.
- Parking: Performing parallel or reverse parking with good control and spatial awareness.
- Three-Point Turn: Executing a controlled turn to safely change direction on a quiet street.
After the Test
Once your test is over, the examiner will let you know whether you passed or not.
- If you pass, you’ll receive your G2 licence, which allows you to drive without supervision. There are some restrictions which are outlined in the MTO Drivers Handbook.
- If you fail, you can retake the test, but you’ll need to wait a minimum of 10 days. Not sure what to do if you fail? Check out our post on What Happens If You Fail Your G2 Test in Ontario?
Final Thoughts
Passing your G2 road test is a huge accomplishment – it means you’re officially ready to drive on your own. The key to success is preparation: practice regularly and don’t take the test until you feel ready.
If you want a little extra support before test day, taking lessons with a certified driving instructor can help you fine-tune your skills and build confidence.
