Looking to get fully licensed in Ontario? The first step in your driving journey is getting your G1 license. To get your G1 license, you’ll need to take a two-part written test. Here’s what you need to know to get your G1 license in Ontario.
What is the G1 test?
The G1 test has 40 questions total, with two different sections. You need to get at least 80% on the test to get your G1 license. The G1 tests your knowledge of things like the meaning of road signs, traffic rules, violations, and more.
You’ll need a G1 to sign up for driver’s ed and begin driving lessons with an instructor. Find out more about taking driver’s ed and booking driving lessons with Kruzee.
There’s a few things you’ll need to do before arriving. Here’s your pre-test G1 checklist:
- Celebrate your sweet sixteen. Ontario residents can get their G1 license at 16.
- Get an eye exam. The G1 requires a brief eye exam to ensure that your vision is good enough to drive. If you haven’t had an eye exam in a while and you’re finding things a bit blurry, you might want to set one up to make sure you can get your license.
- Study. The G1 also requires a written knowledge test on the rules of the road, road signs, and more.
Booking your G1 test
You don’t need to set up an appointment for your G1, since written tests are offered on a first come, first served basis. All you’ll need to do to set up your appointment is find your local DriveTest Centre, no G1 test booking is required.
While the first-come, first served system is convenient, you may also run into long lines at DriveTest Centres. Kruzee data analysis shows that Google searches for “drive test centre” and “g1 test” in Ontario peak in August. Taking your test during off-peak months may alleviate some of this line waiting. The test costs $159.75, which includes the cost of the knowledge test, road test, and 5 year license. Additional test attempts cost $16 each. Learn more about license fees.
