What to Expect During the Class 5 Road Test in Alberta

Taking the Class 5 Road Test is an important milestone for every Alberta driver. While it can feel intimidating, knowing what to expect will make test day much less stressful. In this post, we’ll walk you through when you can take the test, what happens during it, and what to expect afterward.

When Can I Take the Class 5 Road Test?

In Alberta, there are a few steps you’ll need to complete before you can book your road test:

  • Step 1: Get your Class 7 Learner’s Licence by passing a written knowledge test.
  • Step 2: Practice driving with a licenced driver. You must hold your Class 7 Licence for at least 12 months before taking your road test.

Once you’ve met these requirements and are at least 16 years old, you can schedule your road test through a registry agent office. Use the Alberta registry agent lookup tool to find a registry near you. You can either book online via the website or visit in person.

Before the Test

Here is what you need to do on test day:

  • Arrive Early: Plan to get to the registry 20-30 minutes before your scheduled time. This will give you breathing room to check in and get settled.
  • Bring the Right Documents: You must bring your valid Class 7 Licence, along with a second piece of government-issued ID, such as a passport or health card.
  • Bring a Safe Vehicle: You’re responsible for providing a test-ready vehicle. It must be registered, insured, and in good working condition. Double-check that all lights, signals, brakes, and windshield wipers are working properly. If you’ve enrolled in our Class 5 Program + Road Test Vehicle Package, you’ll take the test in your instructor’s car which is fully insured and roadworthy.

If you’re under 18, your parent or legal guardian must accompany you to sign a consent form before you take the test.

During the Test

The Class 5 Road Test typically takes about 45 minutes. When you arrive at the registry agent office, you’ll check in and present your documents. After that, your examiner will meet you and inspect your car to make sure it’s safe. From there, you’ll begin the road test which follows a planned route through nearby streets.

What You’ll Be Tested On

Once you start the test, the examiner will ask you to demonstrate safe driving maneuvers, such as:

  • Starting and stopping smoothly
  • Left and right turns at intersections
  • Lane changes with proper signals and checks
  • A three-point turn
  • Parking – both angle and parallel

The examiner won’t try to trick you, but they do want to see that you can drive safely and confidently in real-world conditions.

After the Test

Once your test is over, the examiner will let you know whether you passed or not.

  • If you pass, you’ll receive a Probationary Class 5-GDL Licence. Once you’re 18 years old and have held this licence for 24 months (or 18 months if you complete a government-approved Class 5 Beginner Program), you will receive your full Class 5 Licence.
  • If you fail, you can retake the test, but you need to wait at least one day.

Final Thoughts

The Class 5 Road Test isn’t designed to trick you – the examiner simply wants to see that you can drive safely and follow the rules of the road. With plenty of driving practice ahead of time, you’ll set yourself up for success.
