7 Essential Tips Every New Driver in Calgary Should Know

Driving in Calgary comes with its own unique set of challenges – from changing weather conditions to navigating busy highways. Whether you’ve just got your Class 7 Learner’s Licence or recently passed your Class 5 Road Test, knowing what to expect can make every drive smoother. In this post, we share seven tips to help you boost your confidence and stay safe on the road.

1. Get Comfortable Driving in All Seasons

Calgary’s weather changes with each season, and you’ll need to adjust your driving habits to match the road conditions.

Practice driving throughout the year so you can build confidence in different environments. When there’s snow on the ground, for example, it’s important to increase your following distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads.

Working with a certified driving instructor can help you develop the skills to handle all seasons safely.

2. Learn Calgary’s High Traffic Areas

Certain parts of the city tend to get congested during rush hours (7-9am and 4-6pm), including:

  • Downtown Core: Particularly on 4th Ave, 5th Ave, and the streets around Stephen Ave.
  • Deerfoot Trail: Especially near major interchanges like Macleod Trail.
  • Glenmore Trail: Especially near the downtown core.

Being familiar with these high traffic areas can help you plan your trips more efficiently and avoid unnecessary stress. If you’re just starting to practice driving with your Class 7 Licence, try to avoid rush hours until you’re more confident navigating busier roads.

3. Be Prepared for Construction Zones

Construction ramps up in the summer, especially in a growing city like Calgary. You may encounter reduced speed limits, detours, lane closures, or poor road conditions.

To navigate construction zones safely:

  • Use Alberta 511: It shows active construction zones and traffic alerts to help you plan your route before setting out.
  • Slow down and stay alert: Construction zones often have reduced speed limits in place for your safety and the safety of workers. Obey posted signs and follow directions from flaggers, if any.

4. Get Comfortable Merging on Deerfoot and Stoney Trail

Deerfoot Trail (Highway 2) and Stoney Trail (Highway 201) are two of Calgary’s busiest and fastest-moving roadways. Merging onto them can be intimidating for new drivers, especially during rush hours.

To build confidence, start by practicing lane changes on quiet streets. Then, practice merging onto less busy highways during non-peak hours, such as Crowchild Trail.

When merging, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use the full on-ramp to reach highway speed before merging.
  • Signal early and check your mirrors and blind spots before entering the lane.
  • Match the flow of traffic – merging too quickly can be just as dangerous as merging too slowly.

5. Get Familiar with ParkPlus

Calgary’s paid street parking is managed through ParkPlus. Download the ParkPlus app to pay for parking right from your phone, extend your time remotely, and find available parking zones.

6. Learn to Share the Road with Cyclists

Calgary has a growing network of bike lanes and pathways, especially in the downtown core and inner-city neighbourhoods. As a driver, it’s important to know how to navigate around cyclists safely.

  • Always give at least one metre of space when passing cyclists. Wait until it’s safe to pass, rather than trying to squeeze by.
  • Check your blind spots before turning or changing lanes.
  • After parking, be cautious when opening your door to avoid “dooring” a cyclist.
  • Be patient – cyclists have the same rights to the road as drivers.

7. Plan Your Routes Ahead of Time

Even if you use a GPS or navigation app, it’s smart to review your route before starting out. Taking a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the key turns can make your drive less stressful. You can also identify alternate routes in case of traffic, construction, or unexpected detours.

Final Thoughts

Becoming a confident driver takes time and practice in all kinds of conditions. These tips will serve you throughout your driving journey, and there’s always something new to learn every time you get behind the wheel.
